Day 3

Ancient Pompeii and the Isle of Capri

Last Breakfast in Rome as the sun rises...

Leaving the hotel in Rome...

Let's get another perspective...
Here is the southern portion of Italy.
Rome is in the top left section of this map.

As we zoom in closer we see Rome and Naples.

Today we travel from Rome to Pompei and the Isle of Carpi.

A little history of Pompei
Frozen in time when it was engulfed by an eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD.
Travel the cobbled streets to learn about Roman life in the first century.

This shows the black lava rock which the city was built on and also proves the volcanic
flow happened before the terrible tragedy of 79AD.

This picture shows the opening courtyard as you enter the city of Pompei.
See the tall tree in the center?
The city was buried in volcanic ash that covered the top of that tree.
You can see Mount Vesuvius in the distance.

This is the smaller of two amphitheaters for the arts - for smaller venues.

Panoramic view of the larger of the two amphitheaters.
Duration: 00:00.21 sec.

Much larger venues.

Another view of the amphitheater.

My attempt at another "selfie".

The streets were used as sewers and the smell was
always terrible. Here you can see the stones placed
strategically for the people to walk over the sewer water.
You can also see the chariot marks from the wheels between the rocks.

The EAST/WEST main street 1 km long
Duration: 00:00.12 sec.

This was another changing room for the trainers.

The male bath house.
The only part of Pompei where the ceiling stayed in place.
Duration: 00:00.22 sec.

Looking back at the ceiling still in tact.

I tried to capture that mosaic floor between the
people walking in front of it.

The Main Center Piazza (plaza)
Government/Retail/Washrooms/Market
Duration: 00:00.18 sec.

Jan in the piazza in front of the temple of Zeus.

This road has "reflective" stones inserted to direct
the merchants from the sea port to the center of town.

The volcanic eruption of 79AD was fierce and furious.
The archeologists were able to make these plaster castings
from the shapes left after the body/bones disintegrated.

Another rendering from the solid ash molds.

Leaving Pompei and arriving Naples, Italy

Since we live on Whittington Course this ad caught my eye.

Leaving Naples on a jetfoil en route to the Isle of Capri

After taking the jetfoil to the Isle of Capri we boarded an open-top taxi...

Photos compliments of Jenny Arnett from Australia

So happy!

Walking to beautiful gardens on Capri

A walk at night to the gardens.

Beautiful blue waters/Switchback path/magnificence in beauty
Duration: 00:00.25 sec.

Another view of the switchbacks.

Another panoramic view and repeat of the switchbacks
Duration: 00:00.28 sec.

There they are!

Stopping at a local cafe for a little
something to eat before we call it a day.

The streets of Capri and native speaking
Duration: 00:00.22 sec.

This sculpture caught our eye at the base of the clock tower.

Finally made it to our room and saying, "Good night."
